Revelation 13:18 - Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.
This verse has been misunderstood by a great many people for a great number of years. I believe it is because most Christians have trusted that their teachers have done their homework as it relates to the doctrines of the Bible.
I must confess I did not "dig out" this truth from the Bible on my own but was taught in a school of theology by a teacher that I believe was gifted by the Holy Ghost. He searched the scriptures and came to find great truth, which he shared with his students. I believe God the Holy Spirit gave me faith, through His word, to believe that what I was being taught was from God Himself. In other words, the Bible validated that what my teacher in school was giving me was received by him of God. (John 1:12 & 13)
I am not a teacher, "per se". I have no degree and did not plan to receive a degree while enrolled in school. I did, however, want to learn more about the Bible. Fortunately for me, the Lord led me to a school and teacher that taught the Bible and the Bible alone was the authority in all things.
The Administrator of this web-site invited me to share what I believe is the gospel of the Lord Jesus. I, like him, believe "freely we have received, freely we should give" (Matt. 10:8). We both believe God has ordained us to be "Ministers of Reconciliation" (II Cor. 5:11-21).
In Revelation 13:18 there is an unfortunate error in the translation of the word "man". The phrase "the number of a man" should have been translated "the number of man".
The Greek word "anthropos" was translated 'a man'. Although 'anthropos' is sometimes translated to refer to a single person, it more times than not refers to all of mankind. Since we have seen that God makes several references to the 2/3 or .666 as being identified with the lost, it supports that the translators should not have translated the word 'anthropos' "a man". They should have translated it "the number of man". The 'A' should not have come before the word 'man' indicating a single man. The number 666 is the number of the beast as well as the number of every man by virtue of Satan's conquest of man.
In Matthew 24:27 we find "so shall the coming of the Son of man be". The word man in this verse is translated from the Greek word "anthropos". This is a proper translation in so far as we know Jesus was not a Son of "a man". He was the Son of man (anthropos). Joseph was not His father - God was His father. Mary, His mother, gave Him His earthly character so He came from mankind or the Human Race.
In Matthew 24:4 the Bible warns "...take heed that no man deceive you". The word man is translated from the Greek word "tis". Tis means "any man" or "any thing". Verse 36 of chapter 24 says "that day and hour knoweth no man". The Greek word 'man' in this verse is the word "oudeis" or "oudemia", which means "not even one man" or "nothing".
The Bible teaches "For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God;" (Romans 3:23). In Job 14:1 we find "Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble." That trouble is the wrath of God. All mankind (born of a woman) is born with the sin nature. We all come short of the glory and righteousness of a holy and perfect God. We are all born into slavery; the master is Satan himself.
Only Jesus can translate us from the Kingdom of Satan into the Kingdom of God. We find supportive biblical evidence of this transfer in Colossians chapter one verse 13.
We see in verse 17 of Revelation chapter 13, the verse before our study verse, God indicates "no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name." We learned in the earlier articles that those that "bought and sold" were identified with the false gospel. God the Father has written His name in the foreheads of those who's names have been written in the Lamb's book of Life. (Rev. 14:1, Rev. 13:8)
I pray this article has been a blessing to you. It gives me much pleasure to present this information to you in the name of our Lord Jesus, who is the Christ.
Can I get a witness?
